ISEM Postdoctoral Fellow becomes a WADA Doping Control Officer
A doping control officer (DCO) is an official who has been trained and authorised by the Anti-Doping Organisation (ADO) with delegated responsibilities for the on-site management of sample collection. Dr Lovemore Kunorozva, a Postdoctoral Fellow at ISEM, will be one of the individuals at the forefront of the ADO and will play an important role in protecting the rights of athletes to compete in doping-free sport. He was one of a few DCOs selected to represent the Southern African region and passed through three application stages before the final meeting.
As a DCO, his role will include being responsible for all steps in the sample collection session, provide a testimony in a court hearing if required, and thus in this role, his job will be to ensure that incidences that could compromise a sample collection session are documented and that ADO is informed immediately.
Congratulations on the election Lovemore!

More MSc Graduates for ISEM!
There were 5 new MSc graduates at the end of 2020/start of 2021 for ISEM!
Dr. Laine Alexander, Dr. Riaan van Tonder and Dr. James Burger completed their MSc in Sport and Exercise Medicine. Their dissertation topics were:
Congratulations to Nicole Kohlmeyer on completing her MSc through ISEM and the Department of Medical Physiology. Her thesis looked at prosthetic provision in the developing country setting as well as prosthesis satisfaction and fatigue in individuals with unilateral amputation in South Africa, whilst using three different prosthetic feet. Well done!
Congratulations to Chanel van Zyl on completing her M in Physiotherapy (Cum Laude) and who was supervised by Dr. Martin Heine (ISEM). Her thesis used qualitative analysis to unravel the nature of "low-resourced settings" when such terminology is used in reporting on studies conducted in the field of rehabilitation medicine. "Low-resource settings" and "Low-to-Middle Income countries" alike, are often used as umbrella terms yet when not operationalised are pregnant of underlying assumptions; often unsupported. Her work is a first step towards improving transparency and transferability of knowledge moving forward. Well done!

How to stay healthy during travel: Prof. Wayne Derman gives crucial advice.
As long haul domestic & international travel for athletic competition slowly begins to resume post the restrictive COVID period, it will be more imperative than ever to keep these athletes healthy. This travel places significant risks of infection transmission and an aeroplane has unique challenges to overcome.
BJSM's Liam West poses the questions to Prof. Wayne Derman who gives golden practical tips on how to commute safely. This podcast was recorded in March - since then the learning curve has been steep and behaviour regarding travel of both athletes and non-athletes changed substantially. Face masks are mandatory on flights, deep cleans of the aircraft pre-flight are routine replacing the need to clean your own tray table.

International Sports and Exercise Medicine Consensus Meetings in the COVID-19 Era: Zoom-ing Across Borders
Having secured funding and planned a June 2020 face-to-face consensus meeting, where global concussion and disability sports experts would travel to the United Kingdom, COVID-19 provided a “curveball”! This consensus meeting had to make a change to online and Prof Derman, ISEM Director, managed to remain in South Africa and still be a part of the meeting. Read the blog post relating to the changes and challenges of this experience. |
Playing a role in Infectious Disease Outbreak Management (IDOM)
Prof Wayne Derman, representing the International Paralympic Committee, is a member of a high-level international Outbreak Prevention Task Force that has developed a free online tool to help event organisers to assess and mitigate the COVID-19 risk during endurance sports events. This online tool was developed in record time by a group of experts from a number of the world's leading sports organisations, including World Athletics, the International Cycling Union and the International Institute for Race Medicine. The World Health Organisation (WHO) was involved in the project in an observer capacity.
“The tool is intended to help organisers assess the risk of staging an event, establish the preparedness of the community and the event organisation for the risks of Covid-19, and clarify any necessary steps to further mitigate and reduce the risk," Derman explained regarding the Infectious Diseases Outbreak Management (IDOM) tool that was launched internationally last week.

Prof Lamberts produces first collaborative PhD for ISEM
Dr Nienke Veerbeek, who studied aging in ambulant adults Cerebral Palsy who have been treated with Selective Dorsal Rhizotomy (SDR), recently received her PhD in Neuroscience at the University of Cape Town. She is the first person to have ever received this PhD, which was a collaborative research project between the Neuroscience Institute (Dr Nelleke Langerak as the main supervisor and Prof Graham Fieggen as co-supervisor) and ISEM & the Division Orthopaedic Surgery (Prof Robert Lamberts).
Besides the fantastic milestone for Dr Veerbeek and the Neuroscience Institute, this achievement is also the first collaborative PhD that ISEM has produced.

Dr Heine awarded NRF funding
Martin Heine, one of the ISEM Postdoctoral Fellows heading up the 'Exercise and Lifestyle for Prevention and Management of Chronic Disease' research area, has just been awarded NRF funding.
The funding will enable Martin to determine whether a fully incentivised 6 week rehabilitation program for patients with non-communicable diseases living in low-resourced settings may lead to better feasibility, and subsequently greater benefits, despite the higher costs. This funding is an exciting and "out-of-the-box" extension to the feasibility randomised control trial, which is currently ongoing in Bishop Lavis. Martin is in the final stages of data collection for this RCT and the protocol can be found in BMJ Open. Congratulations Martin!

1st PhD in Orthopaedic Surgery supervised by ISEM's Prof Rob Lamberts
History was made this year when Dr Reggie King became the first person in the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences to receive his PhD in Orthopaedic Surgery.
“A lot of people were involved in facilitating this and I would particularly like to thank the head of department, who put all the structures together, as well as my supervisor. Without them, this would have been impossible. This kind of work requires so much guidance. It is pretty much impossible to do it by yourself." King's PhD was entitled The management of clavicle shaft fractures - evaluating the ability of a novel locked intramedullary device to achieve union and restore function of the shoulder.
King's supervisor, Professor Rob Lamberts, Head of Research and Research at ISEM within the Division of Orthopaedic Surgery, was also delighted with the achievement. “As a supervisor, it has been a privilege to work with Dr King and being able to write history at Stellenbosch University. This PhD is the 'cherry on the cake'. Interestingly, there are only about five orthopaedic surgeons in South Africa who have a PhD – so it is truly an exceptional achievement," he said. Lamberts said King worked on his PhD whilst working full-time as an orthopaedic surgeon. He submitted his PhD of five chapters in August – three chapters of which were published.

SPORTS MEDICINE CLINIC AT TYGERBERG HOSPITAL
As per the 16th of February, the Orthopedics department of the Tygerberg Hospital in Cape Town will have a new sports injury clinic. The clinic is the practical fulfillment of the vision of Prof. Wayne Derman, director of the Institute of Sports and Exercise Medicine at Stellenbosch University. Tygerberg Hospital is one of the biggest public sector health care facilities in the Western Cape for people unable to afford medical aid. Working at Tygerberg Hospital is characterized by an extremely high workload and limited resources. In clinical Orthopedic practice, this means that resources are generally allocated to the most acute cases and less toward chronic non-acute patients. However, for a talented athlete with minimal means, a chronic injury may be vital to the continuation of his or her sports and/or academic career. The aim of this pilot clinic is therefore to assess the need and feasibility of a sports injury clinic with the public health care sector. |
