fifa medical centre of excellence
FIFA accredits established centres that have demonstrated medical, educational and research expertise in the area of football, including experience in the state-of-the-art diagnosis and treatment of injuries, in the aftercare of injuries and, most importantly, in the prevention of injuries, expertise in football-specific medical assessments, mental and psychological strategies, nutrition, and anti-doping matters.
All FMCEs have to undergo a strict selection process and demonstrate medical, educational and research expertise in football and also report annually on their activities. In 2017, 49 centres were successfully reaccredited, with ISEM being one of only two FMCEs in Africa! The list of all accredited FMCEs can be found here. |

The ISEM Sports Injury Clinic:
The ISEM Sports Injury Clinic is located at Tygerberg Hospital in Cape Town, Western Cape. This clinic aims to get injured sportsmen and women back to what they love the most – their sport! Injured players from the community are referred to our clinic and are seen by a sports medicine doctor and physiotherapist at their initial visit. ISEM is able to refer for any additional follow up tests that are required – MRIs, x-rays, blood tests amongst others – before confirming a diagnosis. Our physiotherapists then assist players with the necessary rehabilitation before they are able to get back on to the playing field.
Requirements for referral to the ISEM Sports Injury Clinic include:

Medical Screenings for Football Players:
One of the requirements for football players competing in certain leagues in South Africa is that they all undergo a medical screening. This screening involves a medical history, current medical complaints, a medical examination and musculoskeletal examination. ISEM provides this service to players and teams needing to be screened prior to the season, competition or match.
To find out more about the medical screenings, please contact Mrs. S Crumpton on [email protected]
Football Research:
One way ISEM continues to grow its large research footprint is through collaborations with institutions, individuals and sports teams. We are currently working with Campus Health Service at Stellenbosch University on a longitudinal cohort study looking at injury and illness prevention in an integrated programme for long term development in young football athletes. We are hoping to determine how the local development programme positively impacts long term youth athlete health, wellbeing and performance, but also to identify and examine significant issues relating to health, wellness and performance which exist within youth football players.
Contact us if you would like to get involved in football research or assist with the funding of specific football-related research projects. Please email Mrs. S Crumpton on [email protected]
